Second Grade Apple Project

Apple Project

Children in second grade learned the nutrition qualities of an apple, including examining the nutrition label (link) and how the apple fits into the “fruit” food group (link).

They worked on Common Core Language Arts principles (link).

Children brainstormed and practiced writing adjectives to describe the apple, formulating an opinion about apples, and finding and writing ‘fact’ claims about the apples.

They were introduced to the ‘selling intent’ of advertising and talked about different ways that advertising makes people want to buy a product.

Children worked in small groups to create print advertising or posters to sell the apples. The lesson was about 45 minutes in total.

Teacher Feedback: “The kids were really engaged: one group was so engaged that the next day, he brought a bag – two bags of apples to share with the class.”
